Online Therapy

Counselling is about building a relationship, whether in person, online or by telephone. Online counselling is just as effective as in-person or on the phone. Since the pandemic, many of my existing and new clients have moved towards online sessions. Online counselling opened up opportunities for therapy that weren't always accessible to my clients with medical conditions. Other clients have found that the convenience and time saved from travelling fit their lifestyle and responsibilities. Online counselling also means you do not need to find a therapist near you.

What to expect

Just like in-person psychotherapy, online therapy offers a non-judgmental, safe, and confidential space for you to reflect on any emotional difficulties and explore your emotions and feelings. We will use a secure and encrypted web platform to provide confidentiality. You will be in your environment when you have online therapy. You choose the space that feels private, comfortable, and safe for you. You can use any tech that has a microphone and camera working. Some clients have found it helpful to position their device before starting the session, minimising the need to juggle it during the session.

When we meet in our initial session, you may want to move or change your camera position until you feel comfortable nd settled. Or, you may prefer

talking and walking. Wherever you choose, you may consider using headphones to reduce the risk of your whole conversation being overheard or to

feel that your surroundings have been muted to prevent distraction during our session. In our initial session, we will agree on how often to meet your goals and regular time. I will email you a link each week before our session, and then we start our work together.

How can online therapy work

Some people find that it’s easier to be vulnerable when they have therapy that isn’t in-person. You may notice that you can open up more in a video or phone call, feeling comfortable in your environment. This can help you express your feelings and process them feeling safe.

How do I know my therapist is qualified in online or phone counselling?

It may be worth checking that your therapist is qualified to work safely online with clients. They will usually have attended a training course approved by the BACP or the UKCP. Also, when choosing a counsellor who is an accredited member, such as BACP, look for registration with the Association of Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO).

How can it help?

An essential part of counselling is that you feel heard and understood. This is no different for online and phone counselling. The sessions – however, they are carried out – should offer you a safe space to talk about your feelings without judgment. I will support you in becoming aware of what you feel and why you feel this way and help you understand what you can do about it.

What can online and phone counselling help with?

Online and phone counselling can help with many issues discussed in person. If online is your preference, then we can most likely work together. I have worked with clients experiencing low self-esteem, anger, loss of confidence and identity, going through a divorce, relationship issues, anxiety, stress, depression, grief, isolation and significant health diagnosis.
